I started on a different career path right after high school. Initially, I got into the teaching field and from there I became more aware of the police and law enforcement life. It just grabbed me, and that’s where I am today. What really attracted me to the job were the people who were working in policing and the dedication they showed; I wanted to be one of those people. I like that I learn something new every time I pick a new assignment. My experience is broadening all the time and that makes me a better police officer.
One night several officers and I responded to a domestic violence call. I remember looking through the window of this house and seeing a young female lying on the floor with her boyfriend standing over her. The young girl sustained injuries, including broken vertebrae and a severe concussion. Later, at the hospital, she came up to me with a neck brace on and simply said to me: “Thank you.” At that moment anyone could have offered me a job that paid twice as much, and without hesitation, I would have refused, because this is exactly where I want to be and what I want to do.
I think a lot of people have a strong desire to become a police officer but are intimidated by the hiring process. The hiring process and testing phases were intimidating for me, and they are not easy. However, you should do as much research as you can and talk to officers who have been through it. Start the process with as much information as you can, face it head on, and you will do fine.
If you are willing to do the right thing – on or off duty – like put your life on the line for someone you don’t know; if you can step up to that plate, then you have what it takes to become a police officer.
