When I was about six years old, there was a problem at my home, and the police were called. When the two officers came in my house, I was afraid of them and what might happen. Apparently, the two officers knew my parents, so they came in and sat on the couch. One of the officers picked up the remote control for our television and began to flip to sports channels. There was some conversation between the officers and my parents, and, after a while, the mood in the house started to become more jovial. Both officers visited my house several more times over the next four years, and I started to look forward to their visits. I remember distinctly how friendly they were, and how they would talk to me and make me feel special.
I took a summer job right out of high school that grew into a lucrative full-time job. But when I had the opportunity to get into law enforcement, I jumped at the chance. I learned that it wasn’t about the money; but for me it is all about the children. There is no better reward than receiving a hug from a child or having a child ask to go with you. Abused or mistreated children need to know there is someone there to help them. They need to know they have a future, and their future has a rainbow.
