Prior to becoming a police officer, I was a teacher. I have a Ph.D. in Russian history and taught college-level history. A few years ago, however, I moved from Ohio to Arizona to be with my future wife. I married well, as the saying goes, but discovered that good jobs for history teachers in my small town are scarce. So, at forty-eight, with no previous experience in law enforcement, I applied for a position with the Prescott Police Department. Because of my age, I wasn’t sure that I would be seriously considered. But I passed all the tests, including the physical fitness requirements, and was hired. Then I trained at the local police academy with recruits half my age. After graduating four months later, I began work as a patrol officer. That was more than a year ago. I am still in patrol, and I love my job. Each day brings something new and different. I get job satisfaction daily helping people in need and catching criminals who prey on others. I enjoy the camaraderie of working with the other members of my squad. And just as important, I now have a job with a decent salary and great benefits.
