While we often envision retirement as a goal to which we all aspire, the reality of post-law enforcement life can be very different, and even jarring. Along with the change in job status can come feelings of loss of identity, purpose, and connection to formers peers and colleagues. Officer families need to be prepared for these potential effects of retirement and to provide support as their officers navigate their new reality. For these reasons, a retirement plan developed early on in an officer’s career, and with family input, is critical to ensuring a smoother and easier transition.
