More About the Agency Search
The Discover Policing law enforcement agency search is based on data submitted by agencies during the 2000 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. The census includes all state and local law enforcement agencies that are publicly funded and employ at least one full time or part time sworn officer with general arrest powers. A 97.4 response rate was obtained from the 17,784 state and local law enforcement agencies operating in the United States.
The contact information that appears represents each agency’s response to the 2000 census questionnaire. Addresses, phone numbers, and other information may have changed or been left blank. Discover Policing offers this search for informational purposes only and cannot attest to the currency, completeness, or correctness of the results. Further, some information may appear to be missing or unavailable, which may lead to search errors. For example, if an agency neglected to include its address complete with zip code on the census questionnaire, the street address information will appear blank the results of a Discover Policing agency search by city or state. This same agency would not appear at all in the results of a zip code based search.
Law enforcement agencies who wish to edit or update the information that appears on the Discover Policing agency search can email discoverpolicing@theiacp.org.
